This room is one of the original bedrooms in our 1928 Spanish Colonial Revival Home. It has original wood plank floors. Most of the trim and the wall light fixtures are also original. The room is a large 12 X 14 space. Being somewhat of purists when it comes to original architectural design, we wanted to revive the room and make it fun and interesting for a five year old boy but not sacrifice anything that was original so that it could be taken back to a traditional room if we so chose. Our only option was to customize the furniture and paint colors to make this a fun room. The stripes were the most labor-intensive part of the room. First the walls were painted the dusty blue color and then white and red and navy stripes were added in a classic ‘longboard’ surf pattern. When this was finished, we set out to build a unique bed. Using an existing captains bed from a unfinished wood furniture store, we painted the bed in sporty colors and added a hand shaped and painted “surfboard” as the ‘headboard’. We positioned the ‘headboard’ lengthwise to give the bed more of a day bed look/feel when it was not in use. There is a large roll out bin for toys under the bed that can be wheeled around the room on casters and tucked under the bed when toys are put away. The desk was added for that grueling Kindergarten homework
and folds down against the wall for playtime, taking virtually no space in the room. The train table has drawers that open to both sides for easy access to toys. My favorite piece in the room is the Ikea shelving unit with the canvas colored baskets for storage. This provides a great look and is the best organizational system I have ever used for kids books, toys, etc. The curtains and rods are off the rack, and inexpensive. The ceiling light/fan has seeded glass with rattan and conveys a casual, beach atmosphere. The sisal rug is sand colored and looks like a sandy beach underfoot. With a sandy beach underfoot, blue walls, a casual beach décor and surf images all around, it makes you feel like you need to suit up and hang ten. My son’s favorite part of the room is the shark party lights, surfing light box and a Huge poster framed in bamboo with a surfer riding a great white with the caption
.’feel the fear, ride it anyways!’ And that’s our room
